| Greathouse Butterfly Farm, Inc. Travelling Exhibit
Seen here at the Botanical Gardens at USF, June 2007.
The frame consists of 10' X 20' EZ-up structures. The USF exhibit is 20' X 20' and uses two of the 10 X 20's side by side. (We have four of the 10 X 20's and can put up a 20 X 40 exhibit This year we have not used the 20 X 40 at all.) The frame is covered with alum-a-net shade cloth and is tailored at the corners so that it fits over the frame snuggly with no "traps" where butterflies can get caught. The entrance and exit doors use "freezer door strips" and include alcoves. We put 200 1gal and 30 3gal flowering plants in this exhibit. There are usually 300 to 400 butterflies flying about. We also use different props including butterfly feeders, butterfly hatcheries, puddleing dishes, terrariums with caterpillars, and cages with 'special butterflies.' There are also signs, signs, and more signs. On top of all that we usually schedule a couple of feeding sessions each day when our guests get to 'hand feed' the butterflies. Sometimes we get a bit more artistic and have background music and various pieces of art (photos, paintings, and/or statuary) integrated into the exhibit. Traveling exhibits are a lot of work and not an easy way to make a dollar. I could never pull one off without a lot of help. My team on this one did a great job even though it was very hot and very humid. This one was a success. We sold every one of our Adopt-A-Butterfly Science Kits, and all of our nets, pop-ups, and butterfly feeders. We also sold 2/3rd's of the plants we brought. This trip was one of our most successful, but they don't always go so well. Zane Greathouse. |
